Broadband to Buckingham Palace

The Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) Value for Money team, headed by Local Partnerships’ Jenny Nuttall, has been nominated for a prestigious Civil Service Award for their work on the Government £1.7 billion Superfast Broadband programme.  The team has rolled out an open-book accounting system to over 50 Local Authorities that has delivered unparalleled cost transparency in a programme of this size and complexity.

In addition Local Partnerships

  • Produced detailed cost reporting that show Local Authorities how their costs compared to others, highlighting issues they could follow up with the supplier
  • Lead negotiations with the supplier that ensured  over £100 million of costs that a supplier wanted to charge to Local Authorities were rejected as not eligible
  • Produced a series of central assurance tests and briefings, reducing burdens on Local Authorities

As at the end of June 2015 the programme is on track and has made superfast broadband available to three million homes for the first time.

The team was commended as “highly skilled” by the NAO, and the Major Projects Authority recently commended the team’s work as being an exemplar of Best Practice, with the work of the team being shared across the Civil Service.

The team will discover whether they have won the award in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on the 12th November 2015.
