Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust is cutting 4,939 tonnes of CO2 and saving £1.25 million annually through energy upgrades supported by the Re:fit framework.
Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust is delivering significant benefits by applying the Re:fit framework with support from Local Partnerships. The Trust’s Energy Performance Contracting project is set to reduce CO2 emissions by 4,939 tonnes annually and save approximately £1.25 million in energy costs.
The Challenge:
Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust covers the London Borough of Sutton and north Surrey. The Trust runs two main hospitals: Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital. The Re:fit framework is an extensive project, encompassing two major acute hospitals. Local Partnerships exclusively provides support to users of the framework nationwide.
The Solution:
The project included four distinct projects across two hospital sites, covering an extensive area of 105,000 square metres. Works included:
Installation of approx. 14,000 luminaires/light fittings in just six months
Addressing critical infrastructure works, particularly focusing on obsolete boiler plants.
The Impact:
The project’s primary sustainability objectives were to achieve significant energy savings, enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure, and implement eco-friendly improvements to the building fabric.
Results include an annual carbon saving of 4,939 tCO2e, with financial costs being reduced by £1.25 million. Addressing critical infrastructure works also minimised the risk of catastrophic failures during winter.
By incorporating energy-efficient technologies such as LED lighting, combined heat and power systems, and upgrades to boiler plants and air handling systems, the project has reduced the Trust’s carbon footprint while achieving significant energy and cost savings.
