This project builds on our earlier work with the 22 local authorities across Wales to identify all the green energy projects currently being developed. The funding is available over a two and a half year period starting 1 October 2015, under the banner of Green Growth Wales.
The capital value of the pipeline is about £310 million. There is considerable scope for the pipeline to grow if all the local authorities increase their pipelines to the level of the most ambitious but there are already 143 green energy projects with an equivalent installed capacity of around 200MW.
If all projects progress as planned, they would generate (or save, in the case of energy efficiency) around 420GWh each year. This is equivalent to around 1% of Wales’ total gas and electricity usage and 14% of Wales’ public sector gas and electricity usage.
Green Growth Wales
This green investment will support around 300 full-time equivalent construction jobs over a five year period, and facilitate the development of supply chains and skill sets in Wales. Delivery of all the projects in the pipeline will be expected to save the equivalent of 116,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
Energy is one of the Welsh Government’s priority economic sectors, and this represents a major investment from the Welsh Government, delivering multiple economic and environmental benefits to local authorities, the wider public sector and the people they serve.
