The MJ Awards 2020: Finalists for the “Leadership in Responding to the Climate Emergency” announced

Finalists for the “Leadership in Responding to the Climate Emergency” category at The MJ Awards 2020 have been announced

Local and combined authorities began to declare a climate emergency in November 2018 and within 12 months 65% had made such statements. Developing a response requires a wide range of elements including policy development, leadership, finance and an understanding of technical solutions.

Our judges chose finalists from a wide range of compelling entries, selecting those demonstrating the best initial response to a declaration of climate emergency. All finalists showed ambitious targets supported by realistic, but challenging, projects. They have considered how barriers will be removed, pace will be created and finances secured. Their responses are comprehensive and cut across traditional service divides within the authority and their local area.

Congratulations to the finalists:

  • Bath and North East Somerset Council
  • Cambridgeshire County Council
  • Cornwall Council
  • Leeds City Council
  • Northumberland County Council
  • Reading Borough Council
  • West Yorkshire Combined Authority

The winner will be announced on 2 October 2020 at The MJ Awards virtual ceremony.

Thanks to our judges for their hard work: Richard Baker, corporate director, Buckinghamshire Council, Claire Coutinho MP, Surrey East, Eithne George, programme director, Accelerator, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and Jo Wall, strategic director, climate response, Local Partnerships.

Congratulations also to the commended councils: Calderdale MBC, LB Camden and LB Waltham Forest, and our thanks to all who submitted entries.
