Met Office enhances Local Authority Climate Service with higher resolution data

The Met Office has released a major upgrade to its Local Authority Climate Service (LACS), giving councils access to more detailed and locally relevant climate information to support adaptation planning.
Launched in 2024 and supported by Defra, LACS has already generated over 21,000 climate reports for councils across the UK. The latest update introduces 1 km resolution climate data, providing a more detailed picture of how climate change will affect specific communities and infrastructure. This new dataset better reflects the influence of coastlines, urban areas and terrain, helping authorities strengthen their local risk assessments.
Rachel Toresen‑Owuor from Local Partnerships said:
LACS has already been a catalyst for a step change in how many local authorities understand how climate change at the local level will impact on delivery of services. The updates to LACS will support more in‑depth, localised exploration for risk assessments and crucially how to adapt and redesign service delivery in a changing climate, to better serve and support communities and businesses.
These enhancements will help councils explore future climate risks in greater detail and plan more resilient services for the communities they support.
Local Partnerships highlights the LACS in our Climate Adaptation Toolkit and we use the service extensively in our work with councils on climate risk identification, adaptation planning and service redesign.
