Energy efficiency and renewable energy – trail-blazing work of Cambridgeshire County Council

The British Renewable Energy Awards, planned annually by the Renewable Energy Association (REA), have recently announced this year’s nominees. The awards are one of the UK’s most prestigious for renewable energy and clean technologies and this year’s call for nominations received a particularly high volume of entries.

Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) was short-listed for an award in the Pioneer category. The category honours an organisation “in a sector not previously associated with renewables that has now become involved and created a pathway that others can follow”. Cherie Gregoire, Special Projects Manager in the Energy Investment Unit at CCC, said: “This short-listing recognises the trail-blazing work of Cambridgeshire County Council in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy. We have taken the tools and run with them, building the first solar farm under the Refit Framework. We continue to extend our team to maximise returns whilst reducing our carbon impact with innovative energy projects across our assets”. RE:FIT supports the council’s overarching Corporate Energy Strategy, which aims to “improve the efficiency of the council’s assets, reduce energy consumption of its services and produce low carbon energy on its assets for local consumption”.

Local Partnerships’ RE:FIT team has supported CCC to deliver an energy programme that has resulted in more than £20 million in energy generation and energy efficiency projects in Cambridgeshire’s schools and property assets. In addition, the projects will save over £1.775 million per year and eliminate the release of over 8,400 tonnes of CO₂ per annum
