House building is at the top of the political agenda, and many authorities are under extreme pressure to generate income and show what they are doing to alleviate housing shortages, and lack of affordable homes, in their area.
There are many constraints on local authorities getting houses built, not least land availability and planning, without one single “lever” that can be pulled to solve the problem. However, one area where authorities can gain back control is how they choose to commission the delivery of housing, whether through the procurement of development partners of the delivery of development “in-house”. On 13 July Dentons kindly hosted a seminar focused on the race to deliver new housing units and how new approaches to delivery can help, in collaboration with Local Partnerships.
The seminar focussed on how local government can maximise the chances of success and enable the delivery of housing projects. We also considered some of the innovative models that are appearing in the market place to help tackle housing supply including:
Commissioning local housing: structures / approaches
Maximising the chance of success
Legal pitfalls and challenges
Simon Bandy spoke alongside Mark Bassett and Jamie McKie from Dentons.
The seminar considered how local government could maximise the chances of success and enable delivery of housing projects. The topics discussed were:
