Budget 2024 – Key announcements for Local Government

Key announcements for Local Government ahead of the Spring Budget 2024 had already been trailed including details of the funding settlement and the requirement to produce Productivity Plans.

While detail of the expected content of Productivity Plans has still to be revealed, the Budget 2024 provided insight into the key areas that the Government want to see explored as part of their drive to boost government productivity

  • Effective project management
  • Reducing fraud
  • Using AI, data and technology

These represent a mix of what should be considered core practice – good project and contract management has long been key to effective service delivery – to the innovative, with the opportunities, and ethical challenges of AI still a hot topic of debate in the sector. AI offers the potential for channel shift and opportunity for solving some of the capacity problems in areas such as Planning. Our work supporting the sector to transform takes into account all of these elements, as well as wider opportunities. Our free resources that can support you include a guide to setting up a PMO, and a toolkit for business process mapping, and we would welcome a conversation about the tailored support we can offer you.

The announcement of new devolution deals for Warwickshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey alongside the North East’s access to the ‘trailblazing’ benefits of Greater Manchester’s and West Midlands’ work with UKG should be seen as a re-affirmation of a long-term direction of travel for devolution. We know, however, from our work across the country how dependent the success of this policy is on strong and effective partnership working at local and regional level and the capacity challenges being posed by the distressed financial state of the local government sector.
