Where there’s muck there’s brass and reduce costs of collection

Where there’s muck there’s brass and reduce costs of collection

Where should you start with waste management? Authorities of all shapes and sizes face mounting pressure to reduce costs of collection and disposal. They also have to balance the societal and sustainability imperatives to reduce the diversion of waste to landfill, whilst maintaining effective rubbish collection services for residents and businesses alike.

Reduce costs of collection

The CIWM has published an article that explores these issues, based on our annual regionally-focussed waste management report. This year the report’s author John Enright, one of our waste specialists, has worked with local authorities across the East Midlands. The report highlights lessons learned in that geographic area, helping advise other authorities on innovative and effective ways to structure and manage their waste activities. By exploring effective practice, the report identifies areas where more than £8m in savings per annum have been achieved, comprising case studies on 19 local authorities. The focus is on district, county, and partnership examples of success.

In A “No Brainer?”, published by the CIWM, John presents selected examples of good practice. Authorities endeavour to achieve efficiencies, and joint services have been deployed to continue to deliver services within the constraints of shrinking budgets.

Let’s Recycle highlighted the Leicestershire county council case study, which has achieved savings of £600,000 per annum since taking a variety of its operations, including 13 of its Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), back in-house. John said “There’s big debate about outsourced or in-house. Local authorities have no pre-conceived ideas on which way to go.”
