Tamar Crossings

Local Partnerships has helped local stakeholders objectively consider the long-term plans of key infrastructure in the South West of England with the Tamar Crossings

The River Tamar, in South West England, connects Devon and Cornwall through 24 crossing points, including Torpoint Ferry, the Royal Albert Bridge, and the Tamar Bridge. 

The key infrastructure has been a trade route for centuries, one of the road bridges dating back to the thirteenth century. Today, the crossings play an important role in keeping traffic flowing, enabling the public to travel safely and swiftly to their destinations. In this last year, over 16 million vehicles have travelled over the bridges and another two million travelled over by ferry. 

Assurance

The Local Partnerships team has stepped in to provide much needed assurance over the current operations and has advised on the entity’s future activities and how they should be delivered, by recommending and implementing a review methodology. 

The review has provided independent assessments of the current operations for local officers and members of both councils and Tamar Crossings. Local Partnerships has produced a set of recommendations for the two constituent councils, Plymouth and Cornwall, to consider for future activities. 

The team was delighted to be part of this project and particularly enjoyed receiving a tour of the ferry and bridge from the chief engineer of Tamar Crossings. This included seeing the underneath section of the roadway bridge, allowing them to admire the scale and mastery of civil engineering.
