The RWM Expo 2023 was a great chance to meet industry experts and champions who are leading a way towards a world beyond waste.
Each year in mid September the great and the good of the resources and waste sector meet in Birmingham for the annual Resources & Waste Management show (RWM show). Several large exhibition halls are jam packed with stands run by suppliers and experts from the waste industry, interspersed with lecture theatres and networking areas.
A highlight of the event was the launch of a showcase film developed by Content with Purpose, partnering with the Chartered Institute of Waste Management: “Leading the Way to a World Beyond Waste”. The future-focused documentary celebrates what is possible through innovation, collaboration, and forward thinking. At a separate session, Defra spoke on a panel about the impacts of the Resource & Waste Strategy and in response to criticism from other panel members reiterated that they are pushing ahead with extended producer responsibility legislation even though the timeline has been set back by a year.
Local Partnerships delivered two sessions in the Local Authority Theatre. Firstly, Derek Rooney & Olly Mangiapane spoke about the development of a Defra funded standard contract template for use by local authorities who wish to procure new food waste treatment facilities. The contract will be road tested by East London Waste Authority and then made available to all local authorities. Hattie Parke also delivered a lively session on how the waste hierarchy has developed since 1979, synergies with circular economy and net zero ambitions, and how it can be used as a framework for strategic thinking. Well done to Derek, Olly and Hattie!
