We will explore the importance of energy in global economic development and how this is linked to climate change.

You’ll learn about the concepts of energy systems and energy services and how all types of energy can be converted to a common unit, the kilowatt hour.

Finally, we will explore how energy has evolved into a complicated system and the implications of this.

This session aims to describe the key aspects and challenges of the transition to net-zero energy systems.

We will explore the UK as a case study and focus on the scale and pace of change required for the energy system to meet the net-zero target.

This requires a complete transformation of how we generate electricity and our transport and heating (and cooling) systems.

Finally, we will look at the increasing importance and the wider benefits of local energy in this net-zero transformation.

This session will explore the concept of smart local energy systems (SLES).

Future energy systems will be decarbonised, decentralised, digitalised and (potentially) democratised.

SLES are a means to achieve this as they enable local energy generation, transport, and heating assets to work together flexibly to keep costs low and deliver wider social and environmental benefits. SLES is a relatively new concept, but there are many trials and projects underway.

Ynni Cymru is exploring its role in delivering SLES across Wales.
